Šolska kronika: revija za zgodovino šolstva in vzgoje (School Chronicle: Journal for the History of Schooling and Education) (ISSN: 1318-6728) is a scientific and professional journal issued by the Slovenski šolski muzej (Slovenian School Museum). This organization is the oldest national institution in Slovenia, existing since 1898, dedicated to the research and presentation of educational heritage. The journal School Chronicle addresses various aspects of the history of schooling, education and pedagogics. It publishes academic articles, memoirs and testimonies (as historical sources), book reviews, reports from conferences and exhibitions on this and similar subjects.
The journal School Chronicle has its origins in the joint proceedings of the Yugoslav education museums of Ljubljana (present-day Slovenia), Zagreb (present-day Croatia) and Belgrade (present-day Serbia), which were first published in 1964. The independent journal, under its current title and within the Slovenian School Museum, is published since 1992.
Through exchanges with similar institutions in Slovenia and abroad, the museum fulfils its mission of spreading awareness of the importance of the educational heritage for the future development of the Slovenian and other European societies. The geographical scope of the journal is both national and international, it particularly covers the area of present-day Slovenia, Central and South-Eastern Europe. The journal publishes two volumes per year, one of which is usually a thematic issue. Articles undergo a double blinded peer-evaluation by the reviewers, members of the international editorial board, which assess the suitability for publication.
Publications are submitted in Slovene or English language.
Since 2020 all articles and other texts in the journal School Chronicle are published in Gold Open Access according to the license CC BY 4.0 International. This means that texts may be downloaded directly from the website and will not be charged for. There are also no fees for submitting or for publishing. There are no plans to collect fees at any point in the future from any part of the editorial and review process. The business model of the journal relies on support from public funds (Ministry of Education of the Republic of Slovenia and Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency). School Chronicle does not accept commercial sponsorships and does not pay for reviews or academic editing; in turn, work published in this journal is also available free.
