Workshops

This workshop is available for visits to primary schools (Years 1 and 2 of the 1^st educational cycle) and institutions for children and adults with various disabilities.

An old wicker trunk hides precious museum objects related to the history of education – from prehistoric pots to a modern digital calculator. Each object carries its own story, opening a window into the time from which it comes. Through storytelling, exploration, and comparison, participants learn how school has changed over the centuries —  and what has remained the same after all.

The workshop brings school heritage to life in a playful and interactive way, encouraging curiosity, observation, and conversation.

The Library of the Slovenian School Museum, with its rich collection, offers a wide variety of possibilities for researching the past of education. In this workshop, students explore the history of their school using archival, documentary and library materials. They actively learn about the different types of material held by the Museum and the basics of research.

The most dynamic museum workshop ever! To win, you will have to use all your skills, knowledge and ingenuity and work as a coordinated team. After a short tour of the sports exhibition, students will take part in a quiz, a series of pantomimes and sports challenges. The Olympic spirit also applies in this workshop: The important thing is not to win; it is to take part.

Duration: 60 minutes

In this workshop, we play a memory game to learn about the plants of our gardens, past and present. We get to know each herb through illustrations by the academic painter Simona Čudovan and photographs of the same herbs with descriptions and their uses. The game combining knowledge, memory and fun is suitable for young curious minds interested in nature, botany and especially the world of medicinal plants.

Duration: 30 minutes

During the workshop, participants will talk about the Roman Empire, enter the world of mythology, and learn about the Roman gods. They will also learn the basics of the Latin language and translate five Latin proverbs together. To round off the fun, they will make playing cards with the theme of the ancient world.

A comic strip is a form of narrative presented in pictures with little written text. This is why it is popular with young readers, even those who are not otherwise keen on books. The Museum offers an art workshop where participants can learn about the art of comics and try their hand at creating comics with scenes from school history.

The ethnological heritage of dressing up and carnival masks is diverse and rich. Schools also have a long tradition of organising school carnivals, which have always encouraged immense imagination and creativity in the making of carnival masks. At the mask-making workshop, you can create interesting carnival masks from different materials, modern or with a hint of the old.

Duration: 45 minutes

This workshop takes us back in time to the “House of Tablets”, as the Sumerians called the building, where the children of the priests learned the written signs of their language. As visitors to the museum, you will also have the opportunity to try your hand at writing with a reed stick. You will use clay to form a writing surface – a round tablet – into which you will press the “wedge-shaped” characters of our alphabet.

In this workshop, we will make unique bird feeders from recycled materials. When winter comes, we can appreciate watching the satisfied birds.

School bells have changed their appearance and role throughout history. In this workshop, participants make their own school bells out of clay pots, decorate them as they like and take them home.

In museums, a selection of objects is usually displayed in the showcases. In this workshop, students can take on the role of museum curators. Like true explorers, they use a worksheet to find out what the object in front of them is, what it is made of and how it was used in the past.
