Types of cookies
Cookies can have very different ingredients. Good cookies are very useful for visitors, especially for sessions, logins, shopping carts and similar website tasks. Some cookies are particularly useful for website owners.For example, they are used to monitor the amount of traffic, i.e. the reach of their website, but they are also indirectly beneficial to the end visitors, as they allow content authors to see which articles on the website are of interest to visitors, and based on the feedback, they can bring the website closer to the readers with more interesting content.However, some cookies are not good, at least from the point of view of the Information Commissioner’s Office. These cookies primarily record information about your online activities, which is then processed and the information obtained is passed on to third parties, most commonly advertisers. This results in different adverts being shown to different people online. Each person sees advertisements for products and services that they are more likely to buy. For the owners of tracking cookies, this allows them to make more money from advertising.The Information Commissioner’s Office categorises cookies primarily on the basis of their invasiveness:

Each type of cookie is treated differently in the law and the Commissioner’s guidelines. The Law on Electronic Communications (ZEKom-1) requires that website visitors be informed about the use of cookies, and in the case of more invasive cookies, website administrators must obtain consent from visitors to use them.

What cookies does our website use?

Obligatory cookies are those cookies that are required for the website to function properly. Based on the information contained in these cookies, the operation and display of our website is adapted to you. We use the following cookies for this purpose:
- AllowCookies: a cookie is placed on your computer so that the next time you visit we know if you allow us to use additional cookies. The cookie is valid for 365 days.
- Visit statistics
The operators of our website want to know where our visitors are staying, which of our individual content is most visited and where you come to our website from in the first place. This is mostly the only contact we have with our visitors. For this reason we record the statistics of the page views. We can tell whether you are a first-time visitor or a regular visitor based on the cookies we place on your computer. For this purpose, we use Google Analytics, which uses the following cookies:
- __utma: the cookie stores the frequency of the user’s visit to the website, the time of the first visit, the previous and current visit. The cookie is set to be valid for two years.
- __utmb: cookie used to check how long a user stays on the website: when the visit starts and approximately when it ends. The cookie is set to 30 minutes.
- __utmc: cookie used to check how long a user stays on the website: when the visit starts and approximately when it ends. The cookie expires when the browser is closed.
- __utmv: cookie is used to store the user’s preferences.
- __utmz: the cookie stores information about where the visitor came from (search engine, keyword, link). The cookie is set to be valid for 6 months.
- Google cannot personally identify anyone on the basis of this record. For each website that uses Google Analytics, the individual web user has different identifiers that are generated randomly.
- Other cookies
We want to provide interesting and engaging content on our website. On some pages we use “plug-ins” or embedded media, such as YouTube videos and Google Maps maps. When you visit pages with this type of content, their cookies are placed on your computer. These are known as “third party” or “foreign” cookies.
The Google Maps tool uses up to five cookies to work:
- NID: the cookie is valid for 6 months
- PREF: the cookie is valid for 2 years
- testcookie: expires when the browser is closed.
- khcookie: expires when the browser is closed.
- SNID: cookie validity is 6 months
