Stereo photography and stereoscopy are significant in the history of photography because they introduced a new way of presenting photographic images, which are viewed through a stereoscope. A stereoscope is a device that allows for three-dimensional viewing of photographs. These images must be created using stereoscopic techniques. A stereoscopic image of a scene is created to show how the left and right eyes see it separately.
The collection of stereoscopic images is one of the few of its kind in Slovenia, which is why it is so valuable. The collection comprises as many as 1,553 stereo images depicting scenes from all over the world.
