The collection has 7,968 photographs with a school theme.
The collection began to take shape shortly after the museum was reestablished in 1938, when the Royal Mining Administration of the Drava Banovina issued instructions for collecting museum materials. This marked the start of the first major campaign to send documentary material to the museum, and among the items sent were many photographs of school buildings. After 1945, the collection grew with each new exhibition. The collection includes old original photographs, reproductions, documentary images, and digital images.
The collection is diverse in terms of location and subject matter. Thematically, the photographs are divided into several groups: school buildings, group photographs of teachers and students, portraits of teachers, school classrooms and school equipment, field trips, school excursions…
Chronologically, the photographs span from the second half of the 19th century to the present. In recent years, digital photography has almost entirely replaced traditional photography. The oldest original photograph dates back to the 1866–67 school year (students of the Imperial-Royal Higher Real School in Ljubljana, group photograph).
The photographic collection is intended for the exhibition, research, educational, and publishing work of the staff, and is also available to numerous external users for study and other purposes.
