State, Value Systems and Education
The exhibition focuses on processes of modernization in education in the territory of present-day Slovenia and its neighboring regions. It addresses the growing role of the state, the expansion of the school network, the eradication of illiteracy, and the emergence of new social values, while also highlighting the persistence of traditional spiritual and moral foundations of culture. The author of the exhibition is Dr. Simon Malmenvall.
The exhibition entitled “State, Value Systems and Education” consists of twenty-two panels featuring a total of fifty-three images with accompanying texts in Slovenian and English.
The exhibition covers an extended chronological span, from the reforms of Maria Theresa at the end of the eighteenth century (the beginnings of mass elementary education under the influence of the Enlightenment) to the Second World War (education in the Slovenian language as a comprehensive system against the backdrop of value-based tensions between Catholicism, liberalism, and Yugoslavism). The exhibition panels present a diverse selection of materials, including town views, photographs of teachers, illustrations, and excerpts from school textbooks.
The exhibition will be on display from 27 August to 25 September 2026 along the Krakovo Embankment in Ljubljana.
