Coming soon: State, Value Systems and Education
In 2026, the Slovenian School Museum will examine the complex education system from the perspective of political and value systems, spanning the period from the reign of Maria Theresa to World War II. We are preparing an in-depth SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM and a TEMPORARY EXHIBITION.
The modern state’s targeted concern for education on Slovenian territory, from Maria Theresa’s School Ordinance (1774) to World War II, was influenced by earlier spiritual and ethical values. Both the State and the Church recognised their mission to educate young people, in many cases cooperating constructively, in others competing with or excluding each other. Evidence of this can be found particularly in the content of laws, curricula, textbooks, educational publications and political controversies. The transmission of knowledge was not the only objective of both social authority holders; they also aimed to shape the individual into a virtuous and community-oriented person influenced by certain value systems.
As a critical yet respectful attitude towards religious traditions, value systems and past educational practices is required for the functioning of a contemporary multicultural and secular society, the Slovenian School Museum is organising a number of activities for both the academic and general public in 2026.
