We took part in a round table at the Typhlological Museum in Zagreb

On the occasion of the White Cane Safety Day, we participated in a round table at the Typhlological Museum in Zagreb. The theme of the discussion was “The past and the perspective of interstate and interinstitutional cooperation in the field of blind culture and care for the blind”.

The discussion was hosted by Morana Vouk Nikolic, Museum Counsellor at the Typhlological Museum, and the following participants shared their experiences and examples of good practice: Nina Sivec, Director of the Typhlological Museum, Nevenka Cosic, Senior Curator at the Typhlological Museum, Andrej Veljač, Executive Director of the Croatian Association of the Blind, Stefan Kušar, Secretary General of the Union of the Blind and Partially Sighted of Slovenia, Jelena Lešaja, Head of the Lending Department at Croatian Library for the Blind, Diana Slalik, head of adapting textbooks for pupils from the Minka Skaberne Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Klara Marija Keršič, project manager at the Slovenian School Museum, Janja Hrastovšek, teacher of students with visual impairments from the IRIS Centre, Ivana Rotim, director of the Vinko Bek Centre for Education.

The panellists presented their work, highlighted examples of good practice and pointed out the challenges they face in their work.

Klara Marija Keršič emphasised that at the Slovenian School Museum, we strive to make our content increasingly accessible to everyone – we are doing so by seeking that all innovations are introduced with the participation of people with hearing and visual impairments; at the same time, we want to introduce change slowly and in a sensible way, so that it really settles into our regular work and becomes an everyday part of our mission.

This year, we have collaborated with the Typhlological Museum in Zagreb on developing the exhibition Light Displaces Darkness. With records, documents, photographs and original objects on display, the exhibition details the development of efforts for the blind and visually impaired in Slovenia and the establishment of the first institution for the education and training for work of the blind in Slovenia.
