We opened the museum’s doors to vulnerable groups
On Saturday 13 April 2024, we opened our doors to vulnerable groups and gave them a real museum experience in a way that was appropriate for them. We were visited by a group of older adults who suffer (partial) loss of hearing and/or sight due to old age. At the museum, we strive to be as accessible as possible to vulnerable groups. Such visits also provide an opportunity to train and empower our employees in the field of museum pedagogy and andragogy.
We gave the group a guided tour of the School Rules! exhibition, pointing out relevant highlights and presenting to them a selected historical period from the permanent exhibition in a clear and vivid way. This was followed by the museum’s Sunday School lesson, at the end of which they sang the song Ljuba vigred se rodi together with the teacher to evoke memories of the school in the past.
After experiencing the lesson, the participants expressed their views and feelings about the museum in a relaxed discussion in the museum library. The guide had a special surprise for them: she shared information and materials on the primary schools each of them had attended, taking them back to their youth with the help of archive material.
At the Slovenian School Museum, we try to bring the topic of education closer to vulnerable groups through planned activities, using the appropriate approaches and tools. Accessibility is one of the main missions of our museum and we will continue to open our doors to vulnerable groups in an organised way.
