Strengthening reading literacy at remote branch schools through our museum programmes
At the Slovenian School Museum, we pay special attention to museum pedagogy because it is largely based on the building blocks of reading literacy. By exploring past lessons, we identify examples of good practice and seek to implement them in our programmes. Our efforts are focused on developing and implementing pedagogical programmes that enhance the reading, writing and comprehension skills of primary and secondary school students.

As part of the special task ‘Reading literacy and competency building between the museum and schools’, we visited three schools in remote areas of Slovenia in September, creating a bridge between the museum and the schools.
On Tuesday, 23 September 2025, we visited the Ledine Branch Primary School, which has 22 pupils in combined classes up to Year 5. We held a Sunday School lesson at the school, introducing the participants to historical school subjects using an appropriate pedagogical approach.
On Wednesday, 24 September 2025, we visited the Breginj Branch School, which has 14 pupils, and the Smast Branch School, which has 23 pupils. Pupils from the combined classes took part in a Sunday School lesson, learning about schooling in the past through subjects and conversation.
By visiting branch schools that cannot afford frequent visits to cultural institutions, we aim to promote the reading culture and make museum content accessible to all children and young people.
