Typhlological Museum in Zagreb
In collaboration with the Typhlological Museum in Zagreb, an exhibition titled “Light drives out Darkness” was organized and was on view from September 25 to November 22, 2024, in Zagreb. The exhibition was curated by Nevenka Ćosić and Morana Vouk Nikolić.
The Slovenian School Museum loaned several important exhibits to the exhibition.
Through records, documents, photographs, and original objects on display, the exhibition provided a detailed account of the development of efforts on behalf of the blind and visually impaired in Slovenia, as well as the establishment of the first institution for the upbringing, education, and vocational training of the blind in Slovenia. Special attention was given to Franica Vrhunc, the first Slovenian teacher of the blind. She pioneered the use of Braille in Slovenia and founded the first Slovenian institution for the blind.
Most of the items on display are part of the collections of the Typhlological Museum in Zagreb, while some exhibits were loaned by the Slovenian School Museum.
The loaned items included: various types of Braille writing slates, a Braille typewriter, a metal lamp with a magnifying glass, a musical indicator, a calculating aid, a Klein apparatus, a tactile map of Ljubljana, and numerous other exhibits.
The IRIS Center, the successor to the first institution for the blind in Slovenia, founded in 1919, has transferred the original items to the Slovenian School Museum for permanent storage, and it is precisely these exhibits that enrich the exhibition “Light Drives out Darkness.”
