Slovenian School Museum 2025 Calendar
The Slovenian School Museum has been producing its calendar since 2009 to highlight various education-related topics. This year’s calendar, the 17th in a row, is dedicated to the 250th anniversary of compulsory education in Slovenia. The calendar’s depictions are taken from books and related works from the second half of the 18th century.
250 years of compulsory schooling on Slovenian territory
The year 2024 marks a quarter of a millennium since the publication of the General School Ordinance (1774), the first primary school law in the territory of present-day Slovenia. Under the leadership of Maria Theresa and Joseph II, the Habsburg Empire began to establish a centralised state school system. Officially incorporating all social classes, it marked the beginning of compulsory education. The Ordinance influenced the printing of books in the provincial (vernacular) languages, thus strengthening the public role of Slovenian. The Ordinance was supplemented by Johann Felbiger’s manual of teaching principles, Method Book for Teachers. In 2025, a quarter of a millennium will have passed since the publication of the German original (1775). The Theresian-Josephinian school reform helped to consolidate certain principles that are still valid today: education as a state concern, the awareness of a making basic set of knowledge available to all children, the importance of group teaching and the moral formation of pupils.
A special feature of the calendar is the rich and informative calendar section, which includes the planting calendar, moon phases, sunrises and sunsets, international days, old Slovenian names of the months and, of course, holidays, vacations and name days. The open calendar measures 32 x 61.6 cm.
