Reading is the foundation of knowledge, personal development, and success in life

On Friday, 6 March 2026, the day after National Reading Day, we held a topical training session for teachers at the museum library entitled “Reading Literacy: A Teacher’s Challenge and Goal”.

Through practical workshops, clear and illustrative examples of best practice, lectures, and a group discussion about the daily challenges teachers face in the classroom, participants learned about the key elements of reading literacy, such as text comprehension, interpretation, critical evaluation, and the use of information. Time was also dedicated to reading a book, which was valuable..

As museum programme implementers, we also observe the negative effects of declining reading literacy among Slovenian students. Museum pedagogy is largely based on the same building blocks as reading literacy, and these have been implemented in museum programmes based on a study of instruction in the past.

At the Slovenian School Museum, we strive to provide teachers with professional support to help them strengthen reading literacy among their students. This is precisely why we have included training on reading literacy in our programme for the first time this year. Organising training for teachers through the KATIS system is therefore becoming one of our top priorities. We are greatly encouraged by teachers, particularly owing to their awareness of the importance of reading for learning, understanding the world, and functioning successfully in everyday life.
