School Rules! A guide to the permanent exhibition of the Slovenian School Museum, written in an easy-to-read format
free
At the Slovenian School Museum, we strive to be as accessible a museum as possible. A step further is the easy-to-read guide to the permanent exhibition. This guide is primarily aimed at visitors with intellectual disabilities and others who need easy-to-understand information. The guide was prepared with the participation of Živa Jakšić Ivačič, teacher and specialist teacher, and test readers from the Sožitje Association Day Centre.
Introducing the easy-to-read guide
At the museum, it is important to us that all visitors can learn about our permanent exhibition. That’s why we have produced the School Rules! easy-to-read booklet. The information in the booklet is written in a way that makes it easier to read and understand. The booklet contains information about the permanent exhibition of the Slovenian School Museum.
There are 13 chapters in the booklet. Each chapter represents one time period. For each time period, we describe what the school looked like at that time. You can also see each time period on the timeline. A timeline is a drawn strip that represents time.
You can use the booklet in the museum while you are visiting the exhibition. You can also take the booklet with you and read information about the exhibition later.
About easy-to-read
Easy-to-read materials are intended for two target groups. (1) Readers with a permanent need for easy-to-read materials: people with dyslexia and other reading difficulties, people with intellectual disabilities, people with autistic spectrum disorders, people with attention deficit disorder, people who lose their hearing before speech develops or who are pre-lingually deaf, people with aphasia and people with dementia. (2) Readers with limited language skills (e.g. foreign-language immigrants) or limited reading skills (e.g. poor readers) – easy-to-read texts can help them overcome their language skills deficit and help improve their reading skills (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions 2010).
