We invite you to spend the Prešeren Day at the Slovenian School Museum. We have prepared a range of free activities for visitors of all ages.
On the festive Saturday, 8 February 2025, the museum will be open from 9 am to 6 pm.

The permanent exhibition School Rules! presents education in Slovenia through time, from prehistory to the present day. Designed as a long blackboard, the interactive exhibition invites visitors to research on their own and further deepen their knowledge of various topics, such as school scenes, scenes from everyday life, toys, sounds and music, pedagogical quotations, models, and ambient settings.
The exhibition Collecting, Researching, Reviving: Sports Heritage and the Sports Museum shows the development of many areas, such as gymnastics, cycling, athletics, water sports, skating, skiing, mountaineering and climbing, and ball games. It displays various objects and photographs of prominent Slovenian athletes and organisations that have left their mark on the sporting tradition.
PROGRAMME
9.15-10.15 Sunday School Lesson
In Sunday School, you will learn to write, read, and do arithmetic, and you will be taught about manners, order, and discipline. From the beginning of the 19th century, introductory and revision Sunday School classes were held on Sundays and holidays, as many village children were unable to attend classes during the week due to their preoccupation with other work and their distance from school. Blaže and Nežica in Sunday School by Anton Martin Slomšek was an important textbook from this period.
10.30-11.30 Handwriting Lesson
In the Handwriting Llesson, you will learn about the importance and role of clear handwriting, and you will acquire the basics of this skill by writing letters with pen and ink. The handwriting exercises will, of course, take place under the watchful eye of Miss Teacher.
11.30-12.30 Discover the magic of Kamishibai (in the Museum Library)
Kamishibai is an ancient Japanese form of storytelling using the wooden butai, a portable theatre. Using pictures drawn in various techniques, a kamishibai narrator presents and tells a story, a myth, a fairy tale, a poem, a humorous sketch, a counting-out rhyme… Kamishibai (Japanese: kami: paper, shibai: theatre) is a unique form of storytelling with pictures.
Miomira Šegina will present the technique of preparing and telling stories through kamishibai, which is suitable for various ages and occasions and can also be used therapeutically.
13.00-14.00 Good Manners Lesson
In the Good Manners lesson, you will learn about the rules pupils had to follow at school and in everyday life. You will get to know the School Rules from 1907 and learn about their significance.
14.30-16.00 For all of us, Slovenians: The story of Jakob Aljaž (in the Museum Library)
Screening of an animated documentary and Q&A with the authors
An animated documentary about the life of the priest, teacher, musician, and mountaineer Jakob Aljaž, was produced in the Smlednik parish under the guidance of parish priest David Jensterle. The script is based on texts written by Aljaž himself, published in Planinski Vestnik and Pevec, as well as on notes by people who knew him and lived and worked with him. The visual part with animation is the work of Juan Juvančič.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the authors about Aljaž’s personality, including his activities in the field of education. The author of the script is David Jensterle, the priest in Smlednik, the author of the illustrations and animations is Juan Juvančič, and the language editor and script consultant is Marjeta Žebovec, a professor of Slovenian and an ethnologist.
16.00-17.00 Natural History Lesson: domestic cat
In this lesson, you will learn about the physical attributes and character of a domestic cat. With the help of Miss Teacher, you will use cat-related proverbs to discover which character traits are common to both people and cats.
9.00 –13.00 Sports Quiz workshop
Put your brain to the test as you browse through the achievements of our top athletes, find out where our grandfathers and grandmothers swam, what kind of cheerleading props they used at various competitions, and where technological developments in sports equipment are heading. Step into our time machine and embark on a sporting adventure. The workshop will take place at the exhibition Collecting, Researching, Reviving: Sports Heritage and the Sports Museum.
