Exhibition Silver games 1984
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Sarajevo Winter Olympic Games, the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia will host the exhibition Silver Games 1984, which is the result of a collaboration between the MNSZS and the Sports Museum Slovenia, in cooperation with the Olympic Committee of Slovenia, and which shows, among other things, the role of Slovenians in the entire Olympic event.
The exhibition will be on display from 19 January to 5 May 2024. Opening on 18 January 2024 at 17:00.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the biggest sporting event ever organised on the soil of the former Yugoslavia. Slovenians were actively involved in the organisation and staging of the Olympic Games, which took place in Sarajevo from 8 to 19 February 1984. A number of Slovenian sports workers took key positions in the preparation and care of the competition venues. Some also took on the role of head coach of individual sports in the then Yugoslav national team, which was dominated by Slovenian athletes. The Olympic Games are also etched in the memory and consciousness of Slovenians thanks to the first Winter Olympic medal won by Slovenian alpine skier Jure Franko for the Yugoslav national team. Journalists and staff from Radio Ljubljana and Television Ljubljana also played an important role at the Games, helping their colleagues from other Yugoslav republics to bring the sporting events to the homes of Slovenians.
The authors of the exhibition Silver Games 1984 are Domen Kaučič and Andreja Zupanec Bajželj from the MNSZS and from our OE of the Museum of Sport, curated by Dr Tadej Curk, Maja Hakl Saje, Dr Tomaž Pavlin and Dr Aleš Šafarič. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue of the same name.
You are cordially invited!
