Imperial song

“Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze unsern Kaiser, unser Land!” by Johann Gabriel Seidl was made the Imperial anthem in 1854, six years after Francis Joseph became Emperor of the Habsburg monarchy. Several translations of Seidl’s poem into Slovenian appeared shortly after its creation. Set to music by Joseph Haydn, it was sung by pupils before the first lesson or at the opening of a new school building, and it was sung with special solemnity in church and on the Emperor’s birthday and name day.
